Testimony of Heather Jones

When Richard and I lived in Sacramento there was a power outage that lasted 4 days. Our ward combined our efforts, supplies and storages to help our ward family. There was no water or heat. A true testimony of family and a ward pulling together.

My experience with food storage has mostly been driven by my desire to stock up when there are good sales on foods that my family eats. Preparedness has been a struggle the last little while because every time we move (and it has been a lot lately- 3 times in the last 4 years) I have to start all over again. Before those years, however we lived in Colorado for 3 years. I was able to stock up quite a bit on a number of items that we used every day. I know that sometimes I would feel like we would never get through what we had, but I continued to be diligent with cycling and re-stocking and adding more to the storage. It was definitely something that helped me feel more secure and have a greater peace of mind. It was also really nice to have things around (ie. powdered milk, powdered eggs, etc.) and know how to make things from scratch so that I didn't have to run out to the store the second I ran out of certain fresh foods.

About 2 years after we had been in Colorado, we were sensing that my husband's job was in jeopardy. Knowing this, I was extra cautious with the grocery bill and I was able to spend a lot less because I was able to utilize my food storage. My husband ended up not having a job and trying to find one for almost an entire year. Knowing that we wouldn't be able to stay in the area, we were also trying to sell our house. This gave me a chance to see how far my food storage would really take our family. At the time it was me and my husband and our two daughters. We did not live strictly on our food storage. I love having fresh fruit, eggs, and milk in the house. But having the practice of storing what we use, using what we store helped us to get through that time without us feeling like we didn't know how we were going to feed our family day to day. Looking back on this, I see how the Lord blessed us for our obedience in preparing with food storage as well as paying our tithing.

It makes me think about the story of Joseph in Egypt when he told pharaoh to store grain because there were going to be years of famine in the future. We don't know when those times of famine will be in our lives. But prophets have counseled us time and time again to prepare ourselves. If we are obedient and follow the prophet, we will be blessed and make it through those tough times. If we choose to look the other way and not obey, then the trial will be much more difficult to endure.

To some, food storage may seem silly. But to me, it is provident living and being obedient. Doing so, I have been blessed and I am forever grateful for it. I testify in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
