72 Hour Kits

Have you noticed a bulletin board next to the Relief Society room at the church?  It is now the preparedness board where I will be posting new things hopefully on a weekly basis.  Be sure to check it out each week when you walk by to see what is new.  The information should also be available on the blog.

Our March-April project is going to be working on 72 hour kits.  Here are some of the things to be looking forward to:

Bulk orders on a few items
Step by Step Instructions
Access to seal your food in Mylar bags to avoid having to rotate for many years
Opportunity to have ID badges made for your kits

If you are interested in participating and haven't already told me through Facebook, be sure to get in contact with me so I can give you updates.

THANKS!

Survival Bread

Sister Egan introduced me to this Survival Bread this weekend.  I have never heard of it so possibly some of you may not have either.  It's bread you can make and it will last on the shelf indefinitely.  She said it hardens like a brick but is edible and provides all the nutrition for an adult for 1 day.

I just came across the recipe while browsing ideas for our 72 hour kits we will be assembling in the next 2 months.  Look it over..

72 Hour Kit - Survival Bread
From - www.selfreliantsisters.blogspot.com
Survival Bread

2 cups oats
2 ½ cups powdered milk
1 cup sugar
3 TBSP honey
1 (3 oz.) pkg. orange or lemon Jello
3 TBSP water

In the mixing bowl combine the oats, powered milk, and the sugar. Mix well and set aside.

In the medium sauce pan mix the water, Jello, and honey. Place on the stove top and bring to a boil. Slowly add this into the oat mixture. Make sure it is all well blended together. If the dough is a little dry, add a small amount of water one teaspoonful at a time. It should be firm but doughy

Once it is ready shape the dough into a loaf, about the size of a small red brick. Place the bread loaf onto the cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. If you increased the recipe for multiple loaves you can place several at a time onto the cookie sheet for baking. Don't place them too close together.

Once the bread is baked remove from the cookie sheet and allow to cool completely. The bread can be wrapped whole in the foil for storage. This bread can be stored indefinitely

55 Gallon Water Barrels

For anybody that can't make it out to Broulim's to pick up your 55 gallon barrel for water this week,   YOU ARE IN LUCK we will do it for you!!

We are trying to take advantage of this sale for $39.99 because they are $55 at the Preparedness Store and the used ones are $35-40 at Cal Ranch.  This is not a typical sale item.

We are taking orders from now until next Tuesday, March 12th.  You will need to get your money to Natalie Peterson by 10am on that day (preferrably sooner).  We will pick them up and deliver them to your door.

Total cost after tax is $42.39

Broulims Case Lot

Now until March 12th.

Hooray for Case Lot!  I love these sales and the opportunity it gives us to stock up on a few items for our food storage.

Be cautious when you shop though because MANY items are just as expensive or more expensive than your regular Winco prices.  I may have missed some, but here are some good deals.

Remember that we do have access to the stake canner so if you buy a lot of these bagged items you can put them in cans for longer term storage and avoid mice eating them.  The cans cost $.90 at the cannery and $.10 for an oxygen absorber which goes in every can except sugar.

Flour - 25 lb bag for 6.98
Sugar - 25 lb bag for $12.88
Waltons Wheat 50 lbs $16.99

Mandarin Oranges - $9.36 for 24 cans - $.39 each
29oz can Peaches - $15 for 12 - $1.25 each
Western Family Tuna  $28.32 for 48 - $.59 each

Toilet Paper!!  18 double rolls $5.99
Paper Towels 18 rolls $5.99

$39.99 for a brand new 55 gallon water drum! This is just as inexpensive as the used ones at Cal Ranch and it would be much better to have a brand new one for fresh water!!

The chili & tomato sauce are cheaper at Winco.

#10 cans of powdered milk are cheaper at the cannery.
Apple Slices are way cheaper at the cannery.

They have #10 cans of honey coated banana slices and freeze dried sliced strawberries.  I thought those might be appealing to some.

Check out Broulims ad here.

Just Add Water

If you missed the Relief Society meeting last Thursday, we had Sister Amy Taylor from Rigby present a class called "Just Add Water".  It was fantastic!

First - if you did not get a booklet that she had available for you please talk to a member of the Relief Society presidency and get one.  They have terrific information to help us get started.

She reminded us that not only are we supposed to be working on our years worth of food storage for our family, we should have 3 months of food that is very familiar to us and easily prepared and stored.  This would be food that will be rotated more than every 25 years like our other food storage.  Much of it will need to be used within 1-2 years.

She had prepared ingredients for 13 weeks of food - breakfast, lunch and dinner and put each meal into a large ziploc bag.   Each week you would eat the same meal 1 time throughout that week.   Each bag was well thought out and labeled for easier organization.  She has provided us 3 meals a day, 7 days a week for 13 weeks worth of meal ideas as well as a price guideline for each item.  All meals are shelf stable, only add water, need no refrigeration and can be cooked without electricity.

Here is an example dinner:  (pretend it's in a bigger bag)
Spaghetti with Canned Vegetables (If you hit the Winco sale you can make a cheap meal!)
Spaghetti Sauce $.48
Noodles $.50
Green Beans $.33
Estimated Cost:  $1.31

Here is how she has the 21 meals broken down in her booklet:

Chicken Tortilla Soup
13 cans of chicken $2 ea
26 cans of broth $.50 or 52 bullion cubes $.08
13 cans of diced tomatoes w/ green chilis $.75
13 cans of black beans $1.00
13 cans of corn $.75
7 bags of corn chips (optional) $1.50
Estimated Cost $73 (with cubes and chips)

There were also a bag of goodies and a bag of medications.  One tip I got was to buy a bunch of your medications at the dollar store and save you bundles of money.  I never thought to do that.

She has made a super great guideline for us to start from or even copy so we can be more prepared for emergencies.  I love it and am so thankful for good people like her that can draw it out for us.
