72 Hour Kit - Week 3

So far, you should have a container to put your 72 hour kit in and clothing for each member of your family.  Most things can be found in the travel section in stores for $1 or less.  These were taken in Target.  I was also thinking you could throw in a shampoo and soap from a motel and the travel toothbrush and paste from the dentist for free.

This week we will be adding - hygine items.  Here is a list of the things you should collect:

-toothbrush & toothpaste

 -antibacterial hand wash


-washcloths/wipes
-kleenex


-sunscreen

-shampoo

-toilet paper
-soap
-comb
-hair elastics
-feminine hygine items

-deoderant


-sponge & dish soap if needed for cleaning your food prep items

72 Hour Kit Week 2

I hope you were able to gather a backpack, bucket or something to put your 72 hour kits in throughout the last week.

This week we need to gather our clothing.
A few things I have learned from doing this.  I put old clothing in the 72 hour kits, things I will not miss out of our drawer.  Some of them have a small stain or are faded a lot. 

It's important that they will still fit which is why we need to rotate at least yearly for the kids.

For everybody in your family:
-long sleeve shirt
-long pants
-hoodie
-3 underwear
-3 socks
-winter hat
-gloves
-poncho
-shoes

I put the kids clothing in a bag so we could put anything wet back into the bag.

For adults or older kids:
-work gloves
-summer hat
*optional:  bags to put your feet in inside of your shoes in case they get wet, sunglasses


Next week will be hygine so if you don't already have travel size hygine items pick a few things up for your family next time you are at the store.  (shampoo, soap, toothbrush & paste, chapstick, kleenex, antibacterial, wipes, etc.)

72 Hour Kit Week 1

For week #1 everybody needs to gather a container to store your kit in.  This could be a bucket, tote bag, backpack, whatever works for you.  It should be sturdy and have a carrying handle of some sort.

Try not to dwell too much on making it perfect.  Something is better than nothing and once it is put together you can always upgrade to something better!!

Survival Bread

Sister Egan introduced me to this Survival Bread this weekend.  I have never heard of it so possibly some of you may not have either.  It's bread you can make and it will last on the shelf indefinitely.  She said it hardens like a brick but is edible and provides all the nutrition for an adult for 1 day.

I just came across the recipe while browsing ideas for our 72 hour kits we will be assembling in the next 2 months.  Look it over..

72 Hour Kit - Survival Bread

Survival Bread

2 cups oats
2 ½ cups powdered milk
1 cup sugar
3 TBSP honey
1 (3 oz.) pkg. orange or lemon Jello
3 TBSP water

In the mixing bowl combine the oats, powered milk, and the sugar. Mix well and set aside.

In the medium sauce pan mix the water, Jello, and honey. Place on the stove top and bring to a boil. Slowly add this into the oat mixture. Make sure it is all well blended together. If the dough is a little dry, add a small amount of water one teaspoonful at a time. It should be firm but doughy

Once it is ready shape the dough into a loaf, about the size of a small red brick. Place the bread loaf onto the cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. If you increased the recipe for multiple loaves you can place several at a time onto the cookie sheet for baking. Don't place them too close together.

Once the bread is baked remove from the cookie sheet and allow to cool completely. The bread can be wrapped whole in the foil for storage. This bread can be stored indefinitely

Hooray for Case Lot!  I love these sales and the opportunity it gives us to stock up on a few items for our food storage.

Be cautious when you shop though because MANY items are just as expensive or more expensive than your regular Winco prices.  I may have missed some, but here are some good deals.

Remember that we do have access to the stake canner so if you buy a lot of these bagged items you can put them in cans for longer term storage and avoid mice eating them.  The cans cost $.90 at the cannery and $.10 for an oxygen absorber which goes in every can except sugar.

#10 cans of powdered milk are cheaper at the cannery.
Apple Slices are way cheaper at the cannery.

They have #10 cans of honey coated banana slices and freeze dried sliced strawberries.  I thought those might be appealing to some.
